Our Church Library Beth Midrash/House of Study

                            Bev Roberts, Librarian

First Baptist Church’s central room is the Library, as it is in most synagogues. It is a beautiful place that is used for books, meetings, Bible study, prayer times and individual reading and study. It is really our armory full of weapons [books] to help us stay alert to the narrow way. The mind is the battleground of the devil so there is a battle of ideas going on. Use the contents of the library to help you defend the Christian worldview.

The Library is available any time the church is open and a meeting not going on there. It is a self-serve procedure. Along the wall next to the hall are books in order of the Dewey Decimal System. Along the wall next to the main office is a section of biographies and shelves holding featured books which have been described in the Library Newsletters. The wall next to the Pastor’s Study has Christian fiction, special collections [for instance on Creationism], a section for Tweens and Teens, then a separate bookcase for children.

It is the goal of your library to have effective tools in bringing the truth to your lives. Each of us should choose first of all the Holy Bible as reading and study material and then be able to learn more about our walk to maturity from other books. It is difficult these days to select books that do not contain heresies, New Age philosophy, “another Jesus, another Gospel “ or other non-Christian content. So, some of the books on the main popular book lists are not on our shelves.   But books are placed in the library to help equip us to engage in the great contests of our age. They are the swords and the Bible is THE SWORD.

A BEAUTIFUL OFFERING   FOCUS ON CHILDREN
Have you ever considered that God calls you to be beautiful? “He invites you to dance the dance of your life in His arms. Do you want to return the lavish love of God with the gift of your life…A sweet offering of your gratefulness…A life that would bless your Father?”

Angela Thomas shows how we are made perfect in Him when we surrender our lives to Him.
Dewey 248.8

The Rest of God
Mark Buchanan writes about restoring our souls by restoring Sabbath in order to create a refuge from our destructive culture of busyness. We are killing ourselves by being over-engaged. Sabbath can bring rest, reverence, and discipleship. This is well worth considering for our lives.     269

As we focus on our children, the following can be helpful.

Already Gone”- Ken Ham/Britt Beemer- Why your kids quit church and what you and the church can do to stop it.                                          301.4

Out door Insights”- Steve Chapman- What a Dad can teach a child in God’s great outdoors.          306.8

Preparing for Adolescence”- James Dobson- How to survive the coming years of change.           305.23
THE WOUNDED HEALER   THE APOLOGETICS OF JESUS
Henri J.M. Nouwen teaches how in our own woundedness we can become a source of life to others. Traditional ways of ministry often have been alienating and ineffective. This simple book shows how we can heal from our own wounds.                 253   Norman Geisler and Patrick Zukeran examine the apologetic teaching, methods, and practices of Jesus so that we can practically apply them in our own outreach.                        232.9

IS JESUS REALLY JEWISH?
ENTER HIS GATES TO YOUR JEWISH ROOTS: by Susan Marcus is a very attractive book that gives good information about our roots.

HEBRAIC ROOTS: by William Mark Huey and John K McKee is an insightful study book that helps Christians learn about their Jewish roots.

Both books Dewey 289.9- in the Jewish Roots collection with green strips on the spine.

"ONCE AN ARAFAT MAN" is a true life story of how a PLO sniper found new life.
Tass Saada was a sniper and chauffeur for Arafat. He was destined for better things- the ultimate triumph of love over hatred, reconciliation over divisions. It can inspire us to overcome the conflicts and divisions in our own lives.   B-SAA

IS THERE TRUTH   REGARDING PARTNERSHIPS
We all keep hearing about many people, including "Christians, who do not believe there is absolute truth. John McArthur addresses this as The Truth War. Fighting for certainty in an age of deception. This war has come right to the church.            Dewey 239

We often are indiscriminate with what we watch on TV, the radio programs we turn to and the books we read, which have serious impact on our thinking, the music that goes in our ears straight to our brain. Our children are allowed to watch and listen to whatever appeals to them and caretakers don't care as long as the kids are quiet. BEWARE!!
There is absolute truth and we need to be discerning and compare media output with biblical principles.

THE ONLY TRUTH READ IT TODAY

MUSIC AND MORALS
  CHECK OUT PROCEDURE
Basil Cole presents a theological appraisal of the moral, emotional, physical and psychological effects of music.

As we sing old hymns, new praise songs let us carefully consider the words and the meaning of the song. If you agree with the theology put forth, then lift it to God to give Him a blessing and you will find yourself blessed.

When we actually listen to the words of the music many of our children/teens are listening too through ear phones right to their brain. We must start to consider how these lyrics are affecting their actions.                    Dewey 781

The simple procedure for checking out books is in a frame hung over the card file in the library. We hope that the easy system will encourage you to use the library often.

A notebook on the card file lists many categories in the Dewey number system so that finding books on subjects you are interested in might be easier. The card file can help in finding a book by author or title.

Take the card out of the pocket on the inside back cover, place your name on it and put the card in the small plastic basket on the card file. When you return the book, just place it in the larger plastic bin.
